Students hear about endangered species all the time, but most ‘flagship’ species are rather distant on the globe. The monarch butterfly is a local species with declining populations, and it is easy to make the effort to help them as a school and as a community. Planting milkweed will help this ‘flagship’ butterfly species survive, and it is very easy to find nonprofit organizations willing to provide the seeds. This is a great comic to encourage environmental stewardship. Students can organize a campaign in their school/community to plant milkweed in yards and fields.
